The Gold Standard

The Bronze Protocol

Spray tan preparation and aftercare for deSoleil clients.

At deSoleil, your spray tan is a precise scientific reaction called the Maillard Reaction. The care you take 48 hours before your visit and the 14 days following determines if your color lasts one week or two. This guide simplifies the science so you can easily maintain a deep, natural-looking glow through every stage of the process.

The Science Behind Your Bronze

Your spray tan is a controlled reaction between our solution and the outer layer of your skin. When you understand how that reaction works, you can prep and care for your skin in a way that gives you a smoother, more even result that lasts as long as possible.

What DHA Does

DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) is a plant‑derived sugar from sugar beets and sugarcane. When it’s applied to your skin, it reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of the stratum corneum through the Maillard Reaction — the same chemistry that browns bread. The result is a non‑toxic, temporary color change locked into the dead cell layer of your skin.

Why Prep and Aftercare Matter

  • The reaction happens only in dead skin cells — no UV, no melanocyte stimulation, no living tissue involved.
  • Your color lasts as long as your skin’s natural exfoliation cycle: usually 10–14 days with proper care.
  • Uneven exfoliation = uneven color.
  • Product residue = blocked absorption.
  • Dehydration = patchiness and faster fade.

Preparing the Canvas (48–72 Hours Before)

Exfoliation removes the uneven dead cells sitting on the skin's surface. pH balancing ensures the surface accepts DHA uniformly. Deep hydration extends the tan by slowing natural exfoliation. None of these steps are about comfort or preference — they are about chemistry.

48–72 Hours Before Your Appointment

Waxing and laser hair removal — complete minimum 48 hours before, 72 is better. Open follicles absorb solution unevenly, leaving a dotted appearance at the surface. Any hair removal service with heat or abrasion must happen before the tan, never after.

Manicures, pedicures, facials — schedule all services that involve soaking, exfoliating tools, or heat before your appointment. Water and abrasion strip fresh color immediately.

Begin twice-daily moisturizing now. Deeply hydrated skin holds color longer and sheds it more evenly. Start 2–3 days before your appointment. The Infinity Sun Hydrating Skin Extender is formulated petroleum-free and mineral oil-free specifically to support skin health without blocking DHA absorption — available in the studio and online.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Actively shedding or sunburned skin develops and fades unevenly regardless of solution quality. If you have a sunburn, reschedule.

Remove existing self-tanner. Layering a professional tan over active self-tanner produces mottled, unreadable results. Apply a dedicated remover 24–48 hours prior, or add the in-studio Normalize Treatment at booking — a pH-balancing pre-treatment that creates a clean, even surface for maximum DHA absorption ($20 add-on / $30 standalone).

Prep product option: The Skin Renewal Exfoliating Masque uses Bromelain (Pineapple Enzyme) and Papain to dissolve dead skin cells chemically, not just physically — combined with biodegradable Jojoba Beads and Kaolin Clay. Rinses 100% residue-free. Use 24–48 hours before your appointment. Available in the studio.

Day of Appointment

Full-Body Exfoliation

Nothing on Your Skin

In the shower the morning of your appointment: full-body exfoliation using exfoliating gloves, a physical scrub, or the Skin Renewal Exfoliating Masque. Focus on elbows, knees, ankles, wrists, and décolleté. This step has more influence on your result than any other single action before you arrive.

✦ No moisturizer on appointment day. Even light formulas create a barrier that blocks DHA absorption and causes surface patchiness — especially on arms and legs. Shower, exfoliate, and arrive completely bare.

✦ No deodorant or antiperspirant. Aluminum-based formulas block absorption under the arms and react with DHA to produce a green or ashy tint in the underarm area.

✦ No perfume, cologne, or body spray. Fragrance compounds react with DHA and cause uneven color development, most visibly on the neck and chest.

✦ No coconut oil, body oil, or oil-based products of any kind — for the entire life of your bronze, not just today. Pure oils act as solvents that create a physical barrier against DHA. Even a thin residue prevents bonding.

The Exfoliating Mitt is the tool used and recommended here — dual-sided, reusable, and effective for buffing dry patches at pressure areas where tan fade always starts first. Available in the studio.

What to Wear

Clothing is the last thing most clients think about and one of the first things that determines whether the bronze survives the ride home.

Wear to Your Appointment

Loose dark pants or a maxi skirt. Relaxed-fit top or oversized tee. Slip-on sandals or loose flats. Dark soft underwear with no elastic waistbands. A zip-up hoodie — you will not want to pull anything over your head post-application.

Never Wear Post-Application

Tight jeans or athletic leggings. Underwire or padded bras. Knee-high socks or compression wear. Structured waistbands or cinched belts. Light-colored synthetic fabrics — the cosmetic bronzer in the solution transfers to light fabric during the first few hours of development. This is normal and washes out completely. It is a guide color, not permanent staining.

Remove all jewelry before arriving. Rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces create tan lines. For weddings, galas, or specific necklines, bring the garment — precise application matching to the dress requires seeing the dress.

Provided in-studio at every appointment: Hair clips and ties, hair caps, disposable g-string, foot protection, and makeup remover wipes. Your privacy is absolute — one client, one appointment, no shared spaces.

Post-session comfort option: Dolce Dust Finishing Powder is applied at the end of every session — a talc-free, ultra-fine setting powder that eliminates the post-application sticky feeling so you can dress and move through your day with complete comfort. Available as a $15 add-on.

The Development Window
(Formula-Specific Rinse Timing)

Your rinse timing is determined by which formula was applied at your session. Jana will confirm your exact window at the end of every appointment.

Signature Spray Tans — 8 to 12 Hour Development Window

Advanced Spray Tans — 2 to 5 Hour Rapid Rinse Window

Applies to: Classic Bronze, Bronze Organics, Perfectly Clear.

These formulas develop over a standard overnight window. Overnight (8–12 hours) is ideal for all three. Rinsing before 8 hours under-delivers the full depth potential. Rinsing after 12 hours does not add color — the reaction is complete.

Applies to: Rapid Development, Unity NR, Ultra Dark.

These formulas use accelerated DHA technology. The rinse window gives you control over depth:

  • 2 hours: Light, natural-looking result — warm and luminous, a believable everyday glow.
  • 3–4 hours: Golden, polished bronze — dimensional and event-ready.
  • 4–5 hours: Maximum depth — rich, saturated, confident.

Classic Bronze: A 12% DHA formula with a reddish-brown cosmetic guide bronzer. Develops into a warm, medium-deep bronze with a natural warm undertone.

Bronze Organics: Eco-certified DHA with walnut extract bronzer and an aloe vera barbadensis base. Ideal for sensitive skin. Produces a soft, warm, golden result. The most requested bridal formula in the studio.

Rapid Development: The most-booked formula at deSoleil. DHA with erythrulose, aloe vera polysaccharides, and a cosmetic bronzer that rinses completely away at the first shower. The real tan is underneath.

Perfectly Clear: No cosmetic bronzer at all — applies completely clear. Zero guide color, zero transfer to white clothing or bed linens during the development window. The DHA develops fully and invisibly over 12 hours. Ideal for white gowns, professional commitments, and clients who prefer a completely clean application.

Unity NR: The studio's most elevated formula. High-grade DHA with niacinamide for barrier support, hyaluronic acid for deep hydration, and a peptide complex for firmness. A skincare treatment and a spray tan in one session.

Ultra Dark: Two full-body coats of maximum-concentration DHA applied in a single session. For experienced clients with prior tan history only. Jana reviews skin tone and tan history at the start of every Ultra Dark session.

Your First Rinse

When your window is complete: rinse with lukewarm water only. No soap, no shower gel, no scrubbing at your first rinse. Step in, let the water run over your skin, and pat dry gently with a soft towel. You will see golden-brown runoff — this is the cosmetic bronzer washing away. The DHA-developed tan beneath it is already complete and fully bonded to your skin. It cannot be washed away.

During Your Development Window — The Protected Period

No water, sweat, or tight clothing until your development window is fully closed. Moisture breaks down the DHA development process mid-reaction and causes streaking. Use dark sheets for your first night of sleep — the cosmetic bronzer transfers to light-colored linens and washes out completely in the laundry. If you encounter rain or humidity during your window: get indoors, air-dry completely, and do not rub.

After your first rinse, apply a gentle, oil-free moisturizer to all tanned areas while the skin is still slightly damp.

Days 1–14: The Preservation Protocol

Moisturize

Moisturize twice daily — morning and night — for the full life of your tan. The spray tan fades as your skin naturally exfoliates. Deeply hydrated skin exfoliates more slowly and more evenly, which means the tan lasts longer and fades more gracefully.

The Infinity Sun Hydrating Skin Extender is the studio-recommended daily moisturizer — petroleum-free and mineral oil-free, formulated specifically not to break down the DHA bond. It also contains a maintenance DHA dose that reinforces your color daily, turning a 7-day result into a 14-day one. Available in the studio.

Shower Protocol

Replace your standard soap immediately. High-alkaline drugstore soaps dissolve the DHA bond. Keep showers lukewarm and brief. Pat dry after every shower — never rub with a towel.

The PHydra-Luxe Body Wash is pH-balanced at 5.5 and 100% sulfate-free — built on Shea Butter, Avocado Oil, and Coconut Oil that cleanse without stripping. Available in the studio.

What to Avoid for the Life of Your Tan

  • Coconut oil, body oils, mineral oil, and petroleum-based products — for the entire life of the tan. These are the primary accelerants of tan fade.
  • Chlorine — avoid for the first 48 hours. After that, rinse immediately after pool exposure and reapply the Hydrating Moisturizer within 10 minutes.
  • Ocean and salt water — rinse immediately, pat dry, and apply moisturizer within 10 minutes.
  • Sun exposure — always apply oil-free SPF. Your spray tan provides zero UV protection.
  • Drink plenty of water — dehydration accelerates skin cell turnover and tan fade.
