How to Prepare for a Spray Tan in Santa Cruz

After eighteen years of working with clients across Santa Cruz County — from Capitola brides to West Cliff regulars to professionals preparing for Monterey Bay events — I can tell you with certainty: preparation accounts for roughly half of the final result. The other half is expertise and formula selection. Both matter. Here is what you need to know to show up ready.

Exfoliate 24 Hours Before — Not the Morning Of

The goal is smooth, even skin with no dead cell buildup for the DHA to cling to unevenly. A thorough full-body exfoliation the evening before your appointment is ideal.

Use a physical exfoliant — a dry brush, exfoliating gloves, or a gentle scrub. Pay close attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and the backs of heels. These high-friction areas accumulate dead skin fastest and are where most uneven fading originates.

Do not exfoliate the morning of your appointment. You want the skin to settle and the natural oils to stabilize before solution is applied.

If you shave, do it several hours before your session — not immediately prior. Freshly shaved skin has open follicles that can absorb solution differently and create a speckled appearance on close inspection.

The Product Blacklist — Read This Carefully

This is the area where most preparation errors happen. The following products interfere directly with how DHA bonds to your skin. If any of them are on your body at the time of application, your tan will be compromised regardless of how good the formula is.

Avoid all of the following on appointment day:

  • Moisturizer of any kind — including body lotion, facial moisturizer, hand cream

  • Deodorant or antiperspirant

  • Perfume or scented body spray

  • Sunscreen

  • Coconut oil, body oil, or any oil-based product

  • Makeup, foundation, or self-tanner residue

Shower before your appointment, but use only a gentle, non-moisturizing body wash. Arrive with completely clean, product-free skin. No exceptions.

If you regularly use a moisturizing body wash or shower oil — switch to a plain cleanser for that one shower. Products like Dove or Oil of Olay body washes leave a residue that can create a barrier between your skin and the solution.

What to Wear to Your Appointment

Loose, dark clothing only. The bronzer in most professional spray tan formulas is a cosmetic guide color — it transfers to fabric before the DHA has fully developed. Tight waistbands, underwire bras, elastic sock lines, and compression garments can create marks during the development window.

Wear or bring:

  • Dark, loose top — nothing fitted across the shoulders or chest

  • Dark, loose pants or a maxi skirt — nothing with a tight waistband

  • Flip flops or slip-ons — no socks

For clients coming from a workday: plan ahead. Keep a change of clothes in your car rather than changing at the studio in post-appointment time pressure.

Everything you need in-studio is provided — hair clips, foot protection, and options for coverage.

Timing Your Appointment to Your Event

This is one of the most common questions I receive, and the answer depends on your formula and your occasion.

Rapid Development formulas (rinse at 2–5 hours): book 1–2 days before your event. The tan continues to deepen post-rinse for up to 24 hours.

Bronze Organics and Perfectly Clear (rinse at 8–24 hours): book 2 days before to allow full development and one rest day.

Ultra Dark: book 2–3 days before. You want the deepest color to settle and the first rinse behind you before you appear at any event.

Bridal clients: your trial session should happen 2–3 weeks before the wedding to confirm your formula and depth. Your final session is 3 days before the ceremony — not the night before, not the morning of. Three days gives the color time to fully mature and allows one gentle shower before you walk down the aisle.

Traveling from Santa Cruz? Book the day before your departure. Moisturize during the flight. Salt air on a Capitola weekend is fine — just rinse and apply lotion within ten minutes of leaving the water.

What Happens After Your Appointment

You will leave the studio with bronzer on your skin. This is the cosmetic guide color — not your final result. Your actual tan is developing underneath it.

For your development window — typically 2–24 hours depending on your formula — no water, no sweat, no tight clothing. Sleep in dark sheets if you're doing an overnight development. When you rinse for the first time, use warm water only, no soap. Pat dry immediately.

After your first rinse, your preservation protocol begins: moisturize twice daily, switch to a pH-balanced body wash, keep showers lukewarm and brief, and stay out of chlorine for 48 hours. A well-maintained spray tan from deSoleil lasts 7–14 days with proper care.

A Note on Santa Cruz Specifically

We live near water. Salt water, chlorine, morning fog, and outdoor workouts are all part of daily life in this county — and all of them affect your tan. This is not a reason to avoid spray tanning. It is a reason to choose an experienced technician who formulates with your lifestyle in mind.

I select your formula based on your skin tone, your skin type, your event timeline, and your post-appointment life. A client who surfs at Pleasure Point needs a different approach than a client preparing for a wedding at Seascape Resort. That conversation happens at every appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a spray tan in Santa Cruz? Book at least 48 hours before your event for most formulas. Bridal clients should plan their final session 3 days before the ceremony, with a trial 2–3 weeks prior.

Can I go to the beach after a spray tan? Not during your development window. After your first rinse, ocean exposure is fine — rinse with fresh water and moisturize within ten minutes of leaving the salt water.

What should I not do before a spray tan? Avoid all moisturizers, oils, deodorant, and perfume on appointment day. Do not apply any product after your pre-appointment shower.

Does humidity in Santa Cruz affect spray tans? DHA works through a chemical reaction with the amino acids in your skin — humidity affects development time slightly, which is factored into formula selection. This is not something you need to manage.

How long does a deSoleil spray tan last? 7–14 days with proper aftercare. Twice-daily moisturizing and pH-balanced body wash are the two most important factors.

Do I need to do anything special if I have a tan already? Yes — a thorough exfoliation is especially important if you're carrying existing self-tanner residue or faded color. Let me know during your consultation and we will prep accordingly.
